Our Beginning and What Keeps Us Going
Founded in 2013, WTP originated when Kristin’s long-time friend and local parish priest asked her to put together a dance or two for entertainment during a fundraising event. With just 10 dancers and a couple of recycled costumes, WTP took to the stage for the very first time.
After the success of the afternoon performance, a deal was made that WTP would continue to use the church hall every Sunday afternoon to practice, and we would put on shows to raise funds — half of the proceeds going to the church and half to a charity of our choice.
Kristin couldn’t do it all alone, though. We had a committee of volunteer parents and a choreography team of BATD-trained dancers to take a group of children of all different ages and backgrounds and bring them together, creating an environment where they could express their creative sides, make new friends, and learn about the importance of helping others.
After a few years of this, WTP grew arms, legs, and jazz hands, and eventually we moved out of the church hall and into our current rehearsal space, the Cardonald Scout Hall. Our shows are held in the Blytheswood Hall in the centre of Glasgow, giving the dancers a chance to perform on a raised stage to an audience of family and friends twice per year, with 100% of profits going to our chosen charities.
Every Sunday, our dancers gather at the Cardonald Scout Hall to rehearse for upcoming performances. Sessions are filled with energy, creativity, and collaboration as the team works on choreography, formations, and timing. All of our dancers, from our littlest minis to our tallest seniors, are given the opportunity to showcase their personalities through movement and expression.
From sketch to stage, our committee works tirelessly to bring each routine to life visually. Many of our outfits are handmade or repurposed from past shows — adding character and keeping things sustainable. This also allows us to keep costs to a minimum, as we want WTP to be as accessible and affordable as possible.
Behind every performance is a dedicated group of directors, choreographers, stage and tech support, photo/filming crew and volunteering parents who handle everything from medical forms and stage lights to pre-show pep-talks and sequin malfunctions – without them, What’s the Pointe wouldn’t exist!
